Join the Racial Justice Task Force on a historical walking tour of Southwest, DC created by the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum. “Before the Bulldozers: Historic Southwest D.C. Exposed is an audio and augmented reality journey exploring the history of the redevelopment of the Southwest neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Using GPS, this Walking Cinema app guides you from site to site through D.C.’s Southwest Neighborhood, telling the story of the country’s first large-scale urban renewal project—a project that uprooted 23,000 people and knocked down nearly 5,000 buildings to create an entirely new neighborhood.” Tasty snacks and a beverage for the walk will be provided. Optional lunch (pay-your-own-way) at Momo’s Chicken & Grill (vegetarian options available) will follow the event. [This event pairs nicely with a visit to the Anacostia Community Museum also offered by the Racial Justice Task Force]

Each slot is for one adult. Each adult may bring and supervise up to two children/youth who can be on their feet for a couple of hours in an urban environment.

What is that silly-named game about? Pickleball is a sport at the intersection of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It’s played with a modified tennis net on a badminton court, with a racket about double the size of a ping pong paddle. Now is your chance to have a Pickleball experience at Riderwood. Jim and Lynn will teach you the basics and then we’ll play a couple of games.
We’ll play outside on brand new courts! Rain date September 16 at 5 pm.

Join the Douglases for an outdoor dry cider tasting event! This is not your mainstream cider. We’ll try at least six different dry ciders from our favorite east coast cideries. Hard cider is gluten-free and our selection has no added sugar. (Some are sugar-free.) Your taste buds will love the complexities and variation in flavor of these unique dry ciders. Cider will be accompanied by light snacks.

Wales now has 4 distilleries and competes with its Irish neighbor on whisky production. We will host a tasting and celebrate the national holiday of Wales called St. David's Day . This holiday commemorates Dewi Sant, who lived in the 6th century, and is still celebrated today. He was said to have performed miracles, including raising up a hill to make it easier for people to see and hear him. The symbol of St. David is a leek. Legend says that before a battle against the Saxons, he advised the Welsh fighters to fasten a leek to their helmets so they could recognize each other. This event will involve leeks, some vegetarian/vegan Welsh dishes, and tasting Welsh whisky. No saint worshipping is involved. Quantity of places is by individuals

It “aspires to illuminate and share the untold, and often overlooked stories of people furthest from opportunity in the Greater Washington D.C. region. Our mission is to tell stories of everyday people making impactful changes, who use their collective power to tackle complex issues and advance a more equitable future for all. While local in nature, these stories are relevant to people and communities across our nation.” Optional lunch (pay-your-own-way) at Busboys and Poets will follow the event. Final dinner menu will be decided with winning bidders. Northern Italy is the land of cheese, butter, gnocci, polenta and woodsy flavors. We will start with the aperitivo a little Prosecco to sip while we're gathering. Then the antipasti, where there could be olives, dried sausage, pickled vegetables. The primo is the first hot course possibly spinach risotto or gnocchi with wild mushrooms. Then the secondi the entree with vegetable sides. Maybe a chicken marsala or osso bucco. Then we'll start winding down with a fruit and cheese board. Ending with Tiramisu and coffee. Each bid is for one individual.

Escape suburbia without leaving it! Join us for a 3-4 mile hike on the Northwest Branch trail beginning and ending in Catherine Buckler’s backyard. Enjoy friendly conversation as we look for local wildlife (birds, squirrels, bugs, dogs....) and signs of fall. On this leg of the Northwest Branch trail you'll be able to imagine you've journeyed to a distant woodland without having to travel very far at all! As hikes go, it will be easy, but there will be some hills and rocky terrain. Sturdy shoes and ankles highly recommended. Each space is for one adult and up to two children who are happy to walk 3-4 miles (or be carried by their adult).
We'll meet at 1:00, hike for 3-4 miles, then return to Catherine's backyard to revive with snacks and refreshments.
In case of rain, we will do our best to reschedule at a time when most people can participate.

This event was such a hit the last 3 years, we're doing it again. The actual Harvest Moon is September 29, but we'll join together a day after. We'll gather on a big grassy area on the Riderwood campus to admire the moon and be serenaded by "Moon Songs." As a special treat, Steve Leete will bring his telescope to look not only at the moon, but some planets as well. Afterward, we'll retire to my apartment to have Blue Moon Beer and Moon Pies. Bring a lawn chair to join us for the evening! Slots are for individuals.
